Braidwood Exhibition 1997

A long time ago, before The Quiltwise Gallery was even a twinkle in the eye, we travelled to Braidwood in the State of New South Wales. It is perched on the edge of the Great Dividing Range about 200 miles south of Sydney and 100 miles in from the coast. It is a tiny country town with one main street and a dozen or so stores, hotel and so on.

But you drive into the town on a Saturday in November, all the shops are festooned with quilts! And there are people everywhere.

Because we had not dreamed about The Quiltwise Gallery at that time, we have only a few photos taken with our little holiday camera. Nevertheless, it is worth knowing about for those prone to go for a weekend drive. The pie shop sells has a wonderful array of food for lunch. We will be back there this year. For sure! (We will get better photos next time, we promise!)

In addition to the colourful street display, there was a large number of quilts on display in the church hall.

If anyone from Braidwood sees these pages, we apologise for not having the details of any of the quilts. Please send us details and, if you would like to promote your annual exhibition, please feel free to post a message here. Please send any photos you have from other years.

Here are just four photos of quilts along the main street (the quilts are shown in more detail in other shots).

Here are some close-ups of the Butcher's quilt ...

And close-ups of the Real Estate quilt ...

The close-ups of the quilts on the house are only just passable — as you saw above, they were small in the original picture, so are these are zoomed from the scan as much as is sensible.

These close-ups are of the first quilt on the left on the white two story building (above). This is an impressive quilt and it is hard to believe it is all on a flat surface.

This is another interesting quilt hanging in the street — the shadow effects are so good, it looks almost like a real shadow from the building.

There were a lot of quilts in the church hall, but this one was very striking and as you can see in the close up, it is hard to believe the quilt is actually flat.
